I first encountered the Decorative and Fine Arts Society when living in Den Hague in the early 1990’s. My husband Colin was working for Lloyds’ Register of Shipping. We lived in Voorburg, just outside Den Hague and through friends in the British community, were introduced to the lecture program. These took place in the convivial surroundings of the Warenar, a small local theatre whose facilities included an inviting bar for after lecture chat. I became the Program secretary and enjoyed hosting lecturers. That’s how I first encountered our previous President Hilary Williams – a most convivial guest!
Returning to the UK in 1996, I looked for a local society. Bromley beckoned and I became secretary under the chairmanship of Diane Chorley. I enjoyed being part of the committee but withdrew after a couple of years as I was asked to take on more responsibility with Mothers’ Union. As a member of the Trustee Board for global Mothers’ Union. I had a fascinating time working with board members from different countries. Our shared commitment to the Christian faith and the value of family life helped us overcome any cultural differences.
When my term of office with Mothers’ Union completed, I was asked to return to the society as Secretary. Chairman Gwin Foley kindly asked me to take on the additional role of Vice Chair. In October 2023 I took over as Chair of the society. I am kept busy as we seek to expand our membership while continuing to provide an exciting programme of lectures, social events, outings and tours for our loyal members. Fortunately, every member of the Arts Society Bromley committee is not only skilled in their task but very supportive of our overall programme. They are proof that not all committee work is dull but can be fun and rewarding!
